2020 ‘Until We Meet in Tokyo’ Silk Scarf

The historic postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was met with an outpour of viral social media posts. Olympians shared emotional photos as they committed to an additional year of training to achieve their dreams. As fear rose around the Coronavirus pandemic, attention shifted from national heroes to national healthcare. Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, told COVID workers, “you are our true champions.”

These drawings were used to create the scarf layout, which was then screen-printed by hand on a 36” silk square.

Crafting Change

The work of FIT alumni took center stage in the FIT exhibition Crafting Change. Organized by the Textile/Surface Design Department in conjunction with New York Textile Month, the works featured in the exhibition used long-established techniques in a modern context to highlight the potential for promoting connection, community, and wellbeing through creating textiles.
